Custom Trading Pins Have A Rich History In Youth Sports

From relatively low-key beginnings at the Olympics, custom trading pins have evolved into a worldwide popular phenomenon. From world-class athletes to Little League players and amusement park guests, custom trading pins are a way to turn strangers into friends.

The custom trading pins so many people treasure today began at the Olympics more than a century ago. First used to identify athletes and officials, the forerunners of today’s trading pins moved toward what we know today in 1906. That’s the year athletes from Sweden introduced pins in their national colors of blue and yellow. Within a few years athletes from many nations were swapping custom trading pins as a way to demonstrate international friendship and cooperation.

Custom trading pins remained largely in the world of just athletes and Olympic officials until about three decades ago. By the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid, spectators also began to show interest in custom trading pins. Soon, many more people were trading pins.

Little League Baseball quickly adopted custom trading pins. The Little League organization issued its first official pins in the early 1980s. The hobby exploded in the youth baseball world. As custom trading pins have become more and more popular, they have become almost as much a part Little League as baseball itself. The trading areas at the Little League World Series are packed with thousands of people each year.

Other youth sports, including hockey, soccer and basketball also feature their own custom trading pins. But trading pins haven’t reached the heights of popularity yet in those sports that they have in Little League.

The Disney entertainment empire introduced its first custom trading pins at its theme parks more than a decade ago. Since then, the company has become a major force in the world of trading pins.
