What are the chances Ireland competes in the 2013 World Baseball Classic?
Its only fair that if Italy, Australia,and South Africa get to compete we get to compete. We can have every reject Irish-American player the way Italy took Piazza when he didnt make team USA.
There is a zero percent chance, since there will be no WBC in 2013. The next WBC, assuming there is one, will be in 2012.
The chances of Ireland fielding a team in that tournament is very low. There is no professional baseball in Ireland today, whereas there is in Italy, Australia. Part of the problem is that Cricket is far more popular there.
I’m sure they could find some American players that would qualify for the Irish team, but probably not as many as you think. It’s more complicated that this, but I think the players grandparents had to have had children as citizen’s of that country, before becoming American citizens, or there parent must have citizenship in that country. Or the player would have to obtain dual citizenship in the country.
Unless they were to expand the number of teams (highly doubtful), I don’t think Ireland will be in a WBC anytime soon.
