Chess Sets

The game of chess has been played for millennia. In spite of its age, chess has had few new rules introduced, although it has undergone several different incarnations over the years. One instance of this “reformulation” is that within the last century, “en passant” or “in passing” has become a rule; this has reshaped the game in terms of how it’s played. We’re not here to talk about the rules at this point, though, and instead are going to talk about sets today.

With many different chess sets, some are thought of as better than other sets. Let’s consider a few characteristics of chess sets before choosing; some of these are listed below:

The type of squares on the chessboard can significantly impact how you play your game; this is called “square contrast.” This may seem nonsensical at first look, but the square contrast is actually important because it’s going to affect how you see your opponents’ moves, and will thus have an impact on how you react to them. Most professionals choose standard black and white boards, for this particular reason.

One of the things you’ll need to consider is “piece weight;” piece weight has three different measurements that you’ll need to take into account, and they are single, double, and triple weight. Many players discount piece weight as an important characteristic, but many think that’s not necessarily smart to do so; the game is psychological in nature, and the sound of pieces hitting the board can indeed psychologically impact your opponent to your benefit.

Board Type: The type of board is also important; you can use just about any type of piece set you want, but you want a heavy board that’s either made of metal or wood. You can often use a marble board if you so desire, but these are typically reserved for outdoor matches.

When you set out to buy a chess set, you may note that you already have chess pieces, which come as part of the set itself. Cheaper sets at retail stores won’t have this inclusion, although you should avoid buying these sets if at all possible, at any rate. Unless you are scraping the absolute bottom of the financial barrel, you should not be using a cardboard chessboard with plastic pieces. Do consider investing in something more expensive and of higher quality if you can do so, especially if you consider yourself serious in the pursuit of chess expertise.

The tournament set is one of the best boards you can purchase. The tournament set is fairly standard, and it will normally come with a set of single weight pieces. It’s a pretty simple matter to have your set upgraded to triple weight, and you can have your set built online to your specifications before it’s sent to you, with triple weight pieces included at your request.

Typically, your board will be made of flexible vinyl that you can roll out and store in a bag made of canvas. The canvas bag easily stores everything you need for chess, including your pieces, board, clock, and books related to chess. You can see that there’s a lot to consider as you move to purchase a chess set.

Naturally, if you are looking for more of a display board, you will want one that is either made of rosewood or even marble. A lot of players like to play outdoor chess, and to meet this need, companies have stepped up to make chess sets that are sized to people. Oftentimes, these sets are made to withstand weather, and will be weighted variously. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you choose something that you’re going to use for years to come, and that will fit you. Some may say that chess is “only a game,” but others think it’s the greatest game ever to be invented.

You have a of choices when it comes to selecting a chess set such as…Revolutionary War chess sets.
