How To Prevent Getting Injuries When Engaged In Sports

Playing sports give you numerous benefits. It makes you physically fitter and healthier. It also helps develop confidence and discipline. However, it also puts you at risk for getting injuries. Especially if you don’t know how to prevent yourself from sustaining one. The following are some common preventive measures.

Let’s start with protective wear. Your head is very much susceptible to injury. So it’s important to put on a helmet where wearing it is required. When buying one, see to it that it’s specifically meant for the sport you’re involved in. Different head protective equipment vary in terms of degree of protection given. For example, a ski helmet is not meant for playing football, and vice versa.

Don’t buy something, say, for example a shiny black helmet with decals, only because it looks trendy. There are multi-functional helmets you can buy at sports shops. Buying one will come in handy if you’re intending to try different sports at the same time. And it also lets you save on sports gears expenses.

There are all sorts of protective equipment for different body parts, depending on the sport. There are sports that require you to put on specs, mouth guards, shin pads, and many others. There are also jock straps and protective cups for men. All these are usually worn for motor or contact sports.

Aside from wearing protective gears, you should take time to do some warm ups. It’s wrong to just get into the court or field and start playing. Warming up prepares your muscles for a vigorous activity. It lengthens the muscles and increases the temperature by directing blood flow towards them.

Warming up helps minimize your risk for getting injured. So how do you properly warm up? Jog for 5 to 10 minutes to increase body temperature. Follow it with 10 to 15 minutes of stretching exercises. Then another 10 to 15 minutes of doing drills for the specific sport you are playing. Don a digital sport watch to see if you’ve warmed up for 20 to 30 minutes.

If you sustained an injury, take a rest or seek medical attention right away. Sports can indeed be addicting. And some people make this mistake of playing again even before an injury has completely healed. This is a bad idea as re-injuring a body part can lead to an even worse damage.

Part of playing sports is getting hurt. This is especially true with contact sports or the likes. But it doesn’t mean that you need to incur an injury during a game. When you follow the preventive measures above, you will minimize your susceptibility to getting hurt.
