How to make a wooden baseball bat?

I’d like to know if anybody could give me the official dimensions of a MLB baseball bat. I’m a teacher in China (most of my students are Tibetans) and would love to introduce baseball to my university. I’m a die-hard RED SOX fan and since spring is coming I’d love to teach and play some baseball with my students. PLEASE HELP. I’ll even take answers from Yankee Fans.

Below are the official dimensions for Major League Baseball.
Wooden bats are typically made from Maple or Ash.
Maple is stronger and will last longer, however if you have never made a bat before Maple can be heavy if you don’t have the equipment to dry the wood properly. White Ash tends to be lighter. If possible, look for the finest grain you can get – this will be the strongest wood. The hardest part is getting a good piece of wood, then you can taper the dimensions almost anyway you want. But don’t get too radical, there is a reason for how a bat tapers. The narrowing at the handle creates a hinge effect that will help create bat speed… here’s a physics assignment for your students.. Create a bat that is all 1 size 2 3/4 all the way down to the handle area and then make the handle small for grip. Swing the bat and check the bat speed – 1) the bat would probably break if you hit a ball with it. 2) the bat speed is slower and it is not related to the amount of wood. By using the proper taper from barrel to handle you create a hinge effect that speeds bat whip and therefore increase bat speed and more power…

(a) The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2 3/4 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.
NOTE: No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a professional game (either championship season or exhibition games) until the manufacturer has secured approval from the Rules Committee of his design and methods of manufacture.
(b) Cupped Bats. An indentation in the end of the bat up to one inch in depth is permitted and may be no wider than two inches and no less than one inch in diameter. The indentation must be curved with no foreign substance added.
(c) The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game.
