Jonathan Papelbon only made $425,000 in 2007?!??!?!? WTF??? Can anyone say, UNDERPAID? Paying a closer like Papelbon that much cash is like Nike making Jordan sneakers in a sweatshop at like 25 cents an hour…he’s probably the most dominant closer in the game and he didn’t even make a million.
He performs just as well as, if not better, than Mariano Rivera, and Rivera makes like 10+ million dollars in a year.
What do you think about the best closer in baseball making such a low wage?
Oh, and he’s seeking a long-term contract with the Red Sox worth more than $425 grand a year
This is where baseball differs from football. Really young players don’t get paid huge money. Papelbon has only completed 3 seasons in the league and is heading into his fourth. He’ll recieve a large pay day to be sure when the time comes.
Mariano Rivera makes that much money because he has proven himself over the the past decade as one of the most dominant closers in history. Papelbon has not done so… yet.
