Some of the minor leagues, that play a full season of aroudn 140 games, divide the season in two halves, in order to keep the games competive in the dog days. You can have a pennant race of sorts in the middle of the season and again at the end. It prevents one team from getting too far in fron or two far behind.
One of the main reasons for this is the volutility of the rosters in the minor leagues, with players getting called up to the next level during the season, the teams are usually very different at the end of the year than they started out in April. It gives a teama chance to recover from a poor start.
It also gives them a mechanism for having expanded playoffs.
