My 12 year old son wants a break from Baseball!?

My 12 year old son has been playing ball since he was 3. Year round since 7. He is one of the best pitchers/1st baseman in the league. However, In the past year he has had 3 injuries, little league elbow, broken elbow, during P.E., and a fractured hand, during P.E. The Doctor said he can start playing March 5th. His coach came by yesterday and my son told him he didn’t want to play ball for now. He said he wants a break. After he returned to baseball from the first two injuries, we could feel the resentment from a couple of parents/players that he was allowed to come back mid season. Even the coaches were harder on him. Should I make him play or let him try something different? I have him scheduled for pitching/hitting lessons to keep him in shape. Is that a good idea?

I know what your son is going through because i was in his position at one point, i even play the same position plus some third, and i am entering college on a baseball scholarship next year, i am 18 now but i began playing ball when i was able to pick one up, and i began playing on the all star team year round about the same time your son did, and once i got to the transition from little league to babe ruth i thought i wanted a break, only for the soul reason that i began to become burnt out on baseball playing year round for so many years, and it was weird to me because baseball is my one true passion, i love the game and everything about it, i just began to get burnt out, so i took a year off, and about the time mid season rolled around i was sick and tired of watching all my friends have fun doing what they love to do (playing ball) and me, sitting there doing nothing, i was kicking myself that whole season, so to answer your question i would let your son take some time to get away, as hard as that sounds, i wouldnt worry about hitting/pitching lessons for a while, if he is as good as you say he will be just fine, and trust me if he shares the same love for baseball as i did and still do, he will come back next year or mid season and he will be rejuvinated and eager to win after his time off. Just dont push him into playing let him make his own decisions and deal with the consequences of it, he will be just fine.

Near the end of a long season, fourteen-year-old baseball pitcher Ben Hyman approached his father with disappointing, if not surprising, news: his pitching shoulder was tired. With each throw to home plate, he felt a twinge in his still maturing arm. Any doctor would have advised the young boy to take off the rest of the season. Author Mark Hyman sent his son out to pitch the next game. After all,…
