Baseball Pitcher Glove Rules

Why is this…..Out / Not Out, in Baseball ?
Im from England and have only been a baseball fan for like a year i understand pretty much all of the rules apart from the following…..
Why when a batter swings and skies the ball straight up into the air and the catcher, catches it…its out, but when a batter swings and the ball just edges the bat into the catchers glove its not out ?
I dont know if i have this rule down correctly maybe i misheard or didnt see correctly but im pretty sure this happened!
We have a sport in England called Cricket with similar basics to baseball…a Batter and a Bowler (pitcher) and if the ball in anyway touches the bat and is caught its out, why is this not the case in baseball ?
Like i said before if i have this wrong you may just laugh at this question but im not sure….hence my post! let me know guys!
Basically, if there are two strikes and the batter foul tips one back into the catcher’s mitt and the catcher holds on to it..its an out. Obviously a pop up to the catcher is an out. What your talking about..is a foul tip on strike one or two that nicks the bat and the catcher catches it…Its not an out…because that bat does NOT make ENOUGH contact with the ball to be considered a hit. It is just a tip, a nick, etc. Its not contact. That’s the rationale for that. Good Question man.
