Hoarders And How To Help The One You Love
Hoarding is a little known mental disease that effects an untold number of people their households, and families throughout the world. The problem is little understood and there are several misconceptions about who is effected, what causes the hoarding in the first place and how to appropriately deal with it. Below is a brief overview of the disorder though if you suspect that you or a loved one suffers from hoarding you should seek out more information from a professional.
Compulsive hoarding is the act of collecting obsessively. Unlike the more traditional notion of collecting such as with baseball cards or Star Wars figures, hoarders will collect anything and everything that may have even the slightest use in the future. While a hoarder’s first intention might be to keep the seat until needed they will most likely not give it up even if it is actually needed. This is because they have placed an emotional attachment to the item and can no longer bear to part with it. This results in piles of unused stuff.
Those who hoard are not doing so out of any type of choice. Often a symptom of a much larger issue, hoarders are compelled to this action and can not help themselves. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the disease. These people are not slobs, nor do they enjoy living in filth. They suffer from a legitimate and serious mental issue and need help. A hoarder’s home is not easy to spot unless you take a step inside. Living spaces are usually overrun with their hoard until there is but a small path way to connect rooms. This level of extreme usually takes years to accomplish. What’s more, these extreme cases may not even remember what they have in their home and are often surprised to find items like dyson vacuum dc17 underneath their stuff.
One of the reasons hoarding can be so dangerous is because severe health and sanitation dangers are often present. For those who have piles of stuff reaching to the ceiling the danger of a landslide is very real. There have been many deaths attributed to a person being pinned under their hoard and unable to dig their way out. They then die of either suffocation or hunger as a result. Severe hoarders will often find that home repairs are impossible since they do not want anyone to see how they live. Small leaks turn into dangerous problems. However, those who suffer from it are usually unwilling to seek help on their own out of fear and shame. Like mentioned before, hoarders do not want to hoard. Approaching the topic is very sensitive and takes extreme understanding of the disease. Professional help is recommended and the use of specialist in the area of compulsive hoarding will be needed.
What you can not do is barge in and throw everything away. This will certainly create more problems then it will solve. Without adequate training the person will simply go back to hoarding possibly at a far more extreme level then before. The winning combination seems to be one with psychiatric help, a professional organizer with experience in hoarding homes, and family members willing and able to provide the help needed.
Hoarding is a serious problem with deep lying issues. It may take years and years of help in order to get this behavior under control. The effort is worth it however and may even save someone’s life. Just remember to be compassionate and patient when dealing with someone suffering from the disease.
