what does the elimination number mean in baseball ” the magic number ” ?

and when does a team clench their division or wildcard ?

The victory you refer to in a pennant race of claiming a wild card spot occurs when you end the season with one more victory and one less less than anyone else in contention fort the division pennant or the fourth position (best season record by a team not winning any of the three AL or NL division).
The magic number refers to the combination of the victories by you or losses by the other team that will result in your team being one of the victorious four.
Elimination number means the same thing–the sum of victories by one team and losses by another that will eliminate one team from contention and give a victory to the other team.

So, in a 162 game season, if your team has a record of 100 wins and 60 losses and the other teams has a record of 99 wins and 61 losses, then the magic number for your team is two–you’ll need two wins by you, or one win by you and a loss by the other team, or no wins by you and two losses by the other team in order to end up still with a better record than the opponent can post.

Of course, it gets difficult to compute if two teams are playing one another with both in contention, or if there are more than two teams in contention in a division or for a wild card spot.

But the basics are as easy as I just described them.
