Can I give away baseball tickets on my sports blog?
I run a Chicago sports blog/website that is still in its infancy stages. Is it legal for me to host some sort of Cubs ticket giveaway on the website? I live in Chicago if that helps. Any laws I need to be aware of? I figure it would be ok but then I remember that when people want to host a raffle they have to obtain a permit from the city or something.
Anyone know if this is ok without getting permission/permits?
Best to make your proposal, and run it by a competent lawyer.
Because There are several laws you may run afoul of. Even large companies usually have someone else run the raffle.
The law you might most likely run afoul of is that of illegal gambling. You cannot charge anything, or require a purchase or anything, for people to enter (a “contest” is somewhat different).
The next problematic thing is people bringing suits because they lost and somehow felt the contest “unfair.”
The city of Chicago won’t issue a gambling permit. If it is a genuine raffle (anyone can enter, no purchase necessary) you may be OK.
