College baseball recruiting often focuses on finding new talent amongst young people to play in their respective teams. Kids and parents alike sometimes don’t realize that senior year high school is just too late in the game to check up on prospective sports scholarships offered by colleges.
In baseball, the steal of second is best employed if a team is ahead, tied, or behind by no more than two runs. The theory that a batter should swing at the pitch so as to “protect” the runner may seem unnecessary, since this doesn’t have an immediate impact on the catcher’s throw, but it can disrupt the catcher’s concentration and cause a less accurate throw to second base.
The baserunner then begins his lead by moving one step closer towards the pitcher. This gives the illusion of him being closer to the bag than he actually is. The ideal lead length is one and a half his or so of his own body length. This should give him the opportunity to reach the bag in a pickoff attempt with one full step and a dive back, wherein he will touch the bag on the rightfield side.
