Baseball Draft Picks Trade
Should I accept this draft-pick trade in my 20-team fantasy baseball league?

I currently have the 20th overall pick (last in 1st round, 1st in 2nd round, last in 3rd round, etc.) and the other guy is willing to get me into the first round, “for a price”. Here’s the trade:
I give up my 20th and 21st overall pick and I get the 7th and 167th (9th round) overall picks. I think it’s very tempting. What do you think?

I wouldn’t. As a matter of interest I had a look at 2 of my drafts just to see how they worked out.

7th – José Reyes and David Wright, both sweet

20th – Carlos Beltrán and Francisco Liriano (Liriano, wtf was he thinking ??)
21st – Jake Peavy in both (nice coincidence)

167th – Clay Buchholz and Jeff Francis

Now depending on what you need there are still some HUGE names at 20/21 (Guerrero, Phillips, Suzuki etc etc). And the dude who chose Liriano illustrates that there will be plenty of people making bad selections (whether it’s insanity or with the heart). Always plan out various choices for each round, makes good drafting sense.

You will be placing too much dependency on one (franchise) player and perhaps an average or prospect instead of having two outstandingly solid players.

Drafts can go weird, great players slip through the cracks and there are always some great prospects or undervalued players to be gotten (part of the fun). But the most essential thing is to have a dependablely solid team. Keeping 20 and 21 pick will give you a far better chance than taking this gamble.
