Is your big market favorite professional sports team always signing the wrong free agents?

What I mean is lets say a top notch top 50 baseball player is a free agent and he is 28 years old, and of course will command a lot of money to sign, but is worth it cause he is really great. he wants a 5 year deal for 80 million dollars.

Your team makes him a weak offer that other teams easily beat. So what does your team do? They go after the 32 year old free agent who has has some great years in the past but is clearly slowing down statistically and is on the decline. They sign this guy for 5 years and pay him 60 million dollars.

Now again, your team is in a big market and makes a lot of money and gets great attendance. Why does your team seem to always go after the latter type of older declining players rather than going for it and get the real younger stud? Seems to me that even though the younger stud is more expensive, he is a better investment for many reasons.

Does this sound like your favorite big market team?

The Atlanta Braves… we didn’t sign Jones this year, Furcal a few years back, but we go after Glavine who is way past his prime… We had TBS for the last few years and pretty much the team of the south, there is no reason they shouldn’t be able to compete with the Mets in terms of spending even though we have a beast farm system and get a lot of homegrown talent.
