Does anyone know why the name of Baseball Sytem Pecota Pecota projection after project law? I really need to know
I do not think it would be named after Bill Pecota. Pecota is actually an acronym, standing for the reader and empirical comparison algorithm optimization experiment.

The Power of Projections $46.48 Why is Europe at the top half of maps and Africa at the bottom? Although we are accustomed to that convention, it is, in fact, a politically motivated, almost entirely subjective way of depicting a ball spinning in space. As The Power of Projections teaches us, maps do not portray reality, only interpretations of it. To begin with, they are two-dimensional projections of a three-dimensional, spherical Earth. Add to that the fact that every map is made for a purpose and its design tends to reflect that purpose. Finally, a map is often a psychological projection of the historical, political, and cultural values of the cartographer–or of the nation, person or organization for which the map was created. In this fascinating book, Klinghoffer examines the world perceptions of various civilizations and the ways in which maps have been formulated to serve the agendas of cartographers and their patrons. He analyzes the recent decline of sovereignty, the spread of globalization, the reassertion of ethnic identity, and how these trends affect contemporary mapmaking. |

Map Projections $85.98 Map projection concerns the science of mathematical cartography, the techniques by which the Earth’s dimensions, shape and features are translated in map form, be that two-dimensional paper or two- or three- dimensional electronic representations. The central focus of this book is on the theory of map projections. Mathematical cartography also takes in map scales and their variation, the division of maps into sets of sheets and nomenclature, and addresses the problems of making measurements and conducting investigations which make use of geodetic measurements and the development of graphical methods for solving problems of spherical trigonometry, marine- and aeronavigation, astronomy and even crystallography. |

State and Local Population Projections $68.48 This book focuses on the methodology and analysis of state and local population projections. It describes the most commonly used data sources and application techniques within each of three classes of projection methods (cohort-component, trend extrapolation, and structural models) and covers the components of population growth, the formation of assumptions, the development of evaluation criteria, and the determinants of forecast accuracy. It considers the strengths and weaknesses of various projection methods, paying special attention to the unique problems of making projections for small areas, and closes with an examination of technological and methodological changes affecting the production of small-area population projections. The authors provide practical guidance to demographers, planners, and other analysts called on to construct state and local population projections. They use many examples and illustrations and present suggestions for dealing with special populations, unique circumstances, and inadequate or unreliable data; they also describe techniques for controlling one set of projections to another and for interpolating between two projections. They discuss the role of judgment and the importance of the political context in which projections are made. They emphasize the "utility" of projections, or their usefulness for decision making in a world of competing demands and limited resources. This comprehensive book will provide readers with an understanding not only of the mechanics of commonly used population projection methods, but also of the many complex issues affecting their construction, interpretation, evaluation, and use. |

Projections of Power $19.98 To succeed in foreign policy, U.S. presidents have to sell their versions or framings of political events to the news media and to the public. But since the end of the Cold War, journalists have increasingly resisted presidential views, even offering their own spin on events. What, then, determines whether the media will accept or reject the White House perspective? And what consequences does this new media environment have for policymaking and public opinion? To answer these questions, Robert M. Entman develops a powerful new model of how media framing works—a model that allows him to explain why the media cheered American victories over small-time dictators in Grenada and Panama but barely noticed the success of far more difficult missions in Haiti and Kosovo. Discussing the practical implications of his model, Entman also suggests ways to more effectively encourage the exchange of ideas between the government and the media and between the media and the public. His book will be an essential guide for political scientists, students of the media, and anyone interested in the increasingly influential role of the media in foreign policy. |

Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics $71.98 Transformations and projections are used extensively in Computer Graphics, a field which is now a part of everyones lives via feature films, advertisements in the media, the screens of PDAs, mobile phones, and other vehicles and outlets. Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics provides a thorough background in these two important topics in graphics. The book introduces perspective in an original way and discusses the mathematics of perspective in detail, yet in an accessible way. It also treats nonlinear projections in depth, including the popular fisheye, panorama, and map projections used by many professionals to enhance digital images. Only a basic knowledge of linear algebra, vectors, and matrices is required of readers, as key ideas are introduced slowly, examined and illustrated by figures and examples, and enforced through solved exercises. Topics and Features:Provides a complete and self-contained presentation of the topics core concepts, principles, and methodsWritten in a clear, easy-to-understand style, geared toward nonexpert professionals and students who want to understand the chief techniques and methods employedFeatures a 12-page color section, numerous figures, and many helpful examplesIncludes a wealth of exercises, as well as answers to many of themIntegrates a complementary website that supplies additional auxiliary material from time to time and an errata list Written for computer professionals both within and outside the field of Computer Graphics, this succinct text/reference will prove an essential resource for readers. This book is also suitable for graduates and advanced undergraduates studying in Computer Graphics and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) courses. David Salomon is a professor emeritus of Computer Science at California State University, Northridge. He has authored numerous articles, as well as the popular books, Data Compression: The Complete Reference (now in its third edition), Data Privacy and Security, and Foundations of Computer Security. |

Datums and Map Projections $93.48 New methods of acquiring spatial data and the advent of geographic information systems (GIS) for handling and manipulating data mean that we no longer must rely on paper maps from a single source, but can acquire, combine, and customize spatial data as needed. To ensure quality results, however, one must fully understand the diverse coordinate frameworks upon which the data are based. Datums and Map Projections provides clear, accessible explanations of the terminology, relationships, transformations, and computations involved in combining data from different sources. The first half of the book focuses on datums, exploring different coordinate systems and datums, including two- and three-dimensional representations of Earth coordinates and vertical datums. After an overview of the global positioning system (GPS), the author introduces the fundamentals of map projections and examines the different types. He then presents models and procedures for transforming directly between data sets. The final chapter presents case studies of projects that illustrate the types of problems often encountered in practice. Newcomers to the field will welcome this treatment that, instead of detailed mathematics, uses lucid explanations and numerous examples to unravel the complexities of the subject. For more experienced readers, the book is a valuable reference that answers specific questions and imparts a better understanding of transformation operations and principles. Features |

Projections and Interface Conditions $149.48 This collection of previously unpublished papers explores the implications of Chomsky’s "Minimalist" framework for the modularity of grammar, which simplifies the "modular" approach he took in his Government and Binding theory of grammar. According to this theory autonomous grammatical components (phonological, syntactic, morphological, and semantic) coexist and interact like building blocks, using a given set of principles at given levels of representation. Chomsky’s assertions have sparked a great deal of theoretical debate, especially with regard to the nature and interaction of each of the building blocks. The contributors to this volume join the debate in a series of case studies that compare modularity in English, French, and Italian, among other languages. In the process they address such issues as the autonomy and applications of modules and their distribution in theory, as well as the role of functional projects in their derivations. Projections and Interface Conditions will interest researchers in any of the above mentioned languages, as well as the large number of linguists working in the Chomskyan tradition. |

Operator Algebras Generated by Commuting Projections $54.98 This book presents a systematic investigation of the theory of those commutative, unital subalgebras (of bounded linear operators acting in a Banach space) which are closed for some given topology and are generated by a uniformly bounded Boolean algebra of projections. One of the main aims is to employ the methods of vector measures and integration as a unifying theme throughout. This yields proofs of several classical results which are quite different to the classical ones. This book is directed to both those wishing to learn this topic for the first time and to current experts in the field. |

A Unified Theory of Verbal and Nominal Projections (Oxford Studies in Comparative Syntax) $141.98 Syntactically speaking, it has long been known that noun phrases are parallel to clauses in many respects. While most syntactic theories incorporate this principle, nouns have generally been regarded as inferior to verbs in terms of their licensing abilities, and nominal projections have been regarded as less complex than verbal projections in terms of the number of functional categories that they contain. Ogawa, however, argues that clauses and noun phrases are perfectly parallel. This book provides a unified theory of clauses and noun phrases, ultimately helping to simplify numerous thorny issues in the syntax/morphology interface. |
