Make Money With Antiques

TV shows like “Antiques Roadshow” inspire people to go out and buy antiques that will hopefully make them money. Are you one of those people?

Many people catch the antique selling bug.  Antiques have been popular for years now but has gained more fans then ever due to media exposure.  People live to hunt in their attic for old forgotten items that might be worth something.

Antique Definition

While this would seem like a very important question, it can also be very difficult to answer.

A good antique should not only have some cultural significance but also some historical meaning that make them more desirable.

Not everyone agrees on an exact age an item must be to be considered an antique. Generally an item must be over 100 years old to be considered an antique.

What to Look for when Buying Antiques

When looking for an antique you need to evaluate condition, desirability, cost, and rarity.

  • Always consider condition. A certain amount of wear and tear is not uncommon but other problems can drastically reduce the item’s value. Look for antiques that are in good condition if you hope to make a future profit.
  • The rarity of an item can increase value even if the condition is not great.
  • Many antiques have no real value but if it appeals to someone, then it’s valuable to them. Even if an item does not have any real value, that doens’t mean you shouldn’t get the item if it still reflects your taste, likes and style preference.
  • You need to also consider the cost. Antiques do not always allow for negotiation. Therfore, you must have knowledge of the actual antique value so that you do not pay too much.  Also, Make sure sure you don’t fall for a forgery, fake, or reproduction. If the price and condition of an item are too good to be true then you need to investigate further.
